Relocating the Sacred in Contemporary Performance Practice A Five Day International Conference at the University of Central LancashirePreston, Lancashire. ENGLANDIn partnership with the Charter Theatre & Guild Hall, Preston25th - 29th April 2001 Are we still in search of the "....deepest layers of human existence - the depth's of one's inner, spiritual environment, where creative silence reigns and where the experience of sacrum occurs"? (Grotowski) How is this relevant today? How do we relocate the language of the sacred in our performance practice? How do we recolonise ancient performance practice without becoming 'tourists'? This conference event, with its mixture of practical workshops, academic papers, guest speakers, and performance, hopes to confront and engage with some of the issues surrounding the re-location of a boardly humanistic spirituality within contemporary performance practices. The conference will feature the work of a number of eminent and highly respected exponents of contemporary performance practice such as Phillip Zarrilli author of ‘Acting (RE)considered’ who has studied and taught kalarippayattu and t'ai chi ch'uan for over twenty years and Nicolás Núñez Founder and Director of the Taller de Investigación Teatral (Theatre Research Workshop) from Mexico and former pupil of Jerzy Grotowski. One off workshops will be led by Enrique Pardo - director of Pantheatre (Paris) and director of the international Myth & Theatre Festival, and Bode Lawal, artistic director of Sakoba Dance Theatre. Sakoba will be performing ‘Night Songs’ at the Charter Theatre on the Friday evening.Conference events run from 9am in the morning (training and workshop sessions) with paper sessions, guest speakers, one off workshops and forums through the afternoon. The evenings are filled with a variety of performance events; The Beckett Project is a long-term collaborative process exploring a psychophysical approach to the performance of Samuel Beckett's shorter plays that began in 1994 between Phillip Zarrilli and Patricia Boyette. This project applies a psychophysical approach to the 'interiority' demanded by Beckett's theatrical minimalism through intensive training in Asian martial/meditation arts. The performance events come to a climax on the Saturday night with a double bill featuring Jah Wobble and his band/project Deep Space, and Genesis P-Orridge with his latest incarnation Thee Majesty. Wobble's music has increasingly attempted to induce states of biorhythmic sanctity by focusing on the simple wonder of the bass pulse. In keeping with this, much of the music developed within the project Deep Space is a form of meditation which focuses and channels these incredibly tight and astonishingly talented group of musicians. Genesis P-Orridge with his latest project Thee Majesty is a fusion of spoken work, vast industrial guitar landscapes trace inducing rhythms and words.
